Elfreth Votes Against Republican Big Ugly Bill

July 3, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth (MD-03) released the following statement on her vote against the Republican Budget Reconciliation Legislation, also known as the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act.

“House Republicans’ Big Ugly Bill is the largest cut to health care, the largest cut to food assistance, and the largest tax break to billionaires and corporations in American history. And yet with a four trillion dollar price tag and five trillion dollars worth of budget gimmicks, this bill is not about fiscal responsibility, it is not about balancing the budget, and it is not about growing our economy.

“The President demanded that Congress rush this vote, all so he can have a photo op on the Fourth of July. As families across our country struggle with higher costs, House Republicans passed a tax scam on the backs of hard-working Americans in order to deliver unprecedented tax breaks for those who need it least.

“Ahead of our nation’s Independence Day, President Trump and Congressional Republicans are ripping away health care from families, letting our children and our seniors go hungry, and cutting millions of jobs. That doesn’t sound like the American dream to me.”

Background:

According to the nonpartisan and independent Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the GOP bill would strip health care from nearly 17 million Americans. At least five million people will lose their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in an average month.

In Maryland’s Third District alone, 133,467 people rely on Medicaid for their health care, including nearly 60,000 children and 9,000 seniors. An additional 66,000 people rely on SNAP to put food on the table for their families.

Elfreth voted against the legislation when it first came before the House in MayShe also voted against the Republicans’ budget resolution, which included similar cuts to Medicaid in April.
