Elfreth Votes Against Republicans’ “Big, Beautiful Bill”
WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth (MD-03) voted against the Republican Budget Reconciliation Legislation, also known as the One Big, Beautiful Bill Act.
According to the nonpartisan and independent Congressional Budget Office (CBO), the GOP bill would strip health care from nearly 14 million Americans. At least 3 million people will lose their Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits in an average month.
In Maryland’s Third District alone, 133,467 people rely on Medicaid for their health care, including nearly 60,000 children and 9,000 seniors. An additional 66,000 people rely on SNAP to put food on the table for their families.
Elfreth released the following statement on her vote:
“Today, House Republicans voted to enact the largest loss of health care coverage, the deepest cuts to food assistance, and the biggest tax breaks to billionaires and corporations in American history. Yet despite these draconian cuts, this reconciliation bill will increase the deficit by $3.8 trillion over the decade and increase the debt limit by $4 trillion.
“In the House Armed Services and the House Natural Resources Committees, my Democratic colleagues and I introduced hundreds of amendments and tried to engage our Republican colleagues in thoughtful deliberation to achieve the best outcome for all of our districts. In the House Rules Committee, I tried once more to amend this bill on behalf of my constituents, raising multiple national security concerns with this legislation. Unfortunately, Republicans blocked every Democratic amendment in their pursuit of a hyperpartisan bill that will shake the foundation of the American health care system.
“As Maryland families struggle to make ends meet, pay off medical debt, and put food on the table, it is unconscionable for House Republicans to rush through legislation that will only increase costs for hard-working families and further send our nation into unsustainable deficits, while delivering unprecedented tax breaks to billionaires.”
