Elfreth Statement on the U.S. Naval Academy Ending Affirmative Action

March 28, 2025

WASHINGTON, DC – Today, Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth (MD-03), a member of the House Armed Services Committee and the representative of the U.S. Naval Academy in the House of Representatives, released the following statement on the U.S. Naval Academy ending affirmative action.

“The U.S. Naval Academy graduates the most qualified and capable individuals who have all passed the same set of rigorous standards and who simply want to serve their country; it is one of the most well-respected institutions in the world. A Navy and Marine Corps that reflect the diversity of our country is our strongest Navy and Marine Corps. Diversity and inclusion allow our academies to not just reflect how our country looks but are critical to mission readiness and strong national security.”

“Diversity is not just our greatest strength at home, but abroad, where diverse and multi-lingual troops can be the difference between a successful mission and a failure. Our sailors are a direct reflection of our country’s values across the world, and we only stand to benefit when we display the multitude of experiences and perspectives that our sailors hold.”

“The divisive culture wars that President Trump and Secretary Hegseth are choosing to foment don’t make our country any more safe—they only serve to divide. This disastrous decision will have negative implications on our military’s recruitment and retention for decades to come. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I will continue to fight for a military that respects and appreciates the sacrifices and experiences of all servicemembers. It is shameful that our President and Secretary of Defense cannot do the same.”

Earlier this week, Elfreth honored the women and women of color of the U.S. Naval Academy for Women’s History Month. She has also spoken out forcefully against President Trump’s Executive Orders that roll back DEI programs across the federal government, including at our service academies.
