Elfreth Statement on President Trump’s Escalation in Iran

June 21, 2025

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Today, Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth (MD-03), a member of the House Armed Services Committee, released the following statement.

“Congress has the constitutional authority to authorize strikes against enemies and declare war. The President owes Congress and the American people a clear strategy that protects the safety of our servicemembers, diplomats, and innocent civilians. This is a critical moment for members of Congress – Democratic and Republican alike – to reassert our constitutional authority.

“Two things can be true at the same time: Iran cannot be allowed to become a nuclear power, and I’m concerned that today’s escalation could bring the U.S. into another endless and unnecessary conflict in the Middle East – risking the lives of countless Americans abroad. The President’s actions today are exactly why we should not be operating under 20-year-old Authorizations for Use of Military Force that were authorized after 9/11.

“On Monday, the House of Representatives will return to Washington after a week of work in our districts. I look forward to getting briefed, bringing the concerns of my constituents to the House Armed Services Committee, and pressing for answers from this Administration.”
