Elfreth Statement on the January 6th Anniversary

January 6, 2026

WASHINGTON, DC - Today, Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth (MD-03) released the following statement on the five-year anniversary of January 6th.

“Today marks the five-year anniversary of January 6th. One of the darkest days in our history, we witnessed our democracy pushed to the brink after the President incited an angry mob to storm our nation’s Capitol. On this solemn day, we honor the brave men and women from the U.S. Capitol Police and other law enforcement agencies who defended our democracy and ensured the rightful certification of the 2020 election results. It is disgraceful that on his first day back in office, the President pardoned and commuted the sentences of nearly 1,600 individuals connected to the January 6th insurrection – hundreds of whom assaulted law enforcement officers and many of whom have since been charged with new crimes. Five years later, we still have a lot of work left to heal our country, but that can only begin by learning the lessons of January 6th, 2021.”
