Elfreth Withholds Own Pay During Shutdown
WASHINGTON, DC - Today, as thousands of federal workers anticipate not receiving a paycheck due to the government shutdown, Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth (MD-03) requested the Chief Administrative Officer of the House withhold her pay until the government is fully reopened.
“I’m standing in solidarity with the 44,000 federal workers in Maryland’s Third District who are struggling to pay their bills this month and whose families are hurting due to this Republican shutdown. With over half of Americans living paycheck to paycheck, a government shutdown creates real stress for millions of American families nationwide. I believe I should be treated like any other federal employee. If they’re not getting paid, neither am I,” said Congresswoman Elfreth.
Congresswoman Elfreth and Senator Alsobrooks (D-MD) introduced the Help Federals Employees During a Shutdown Act (Help FEDS Act) to ensure federal employees who are required to work without pay during a government shutdown are eligible to apply for unemployment insurance (UI).
Elfreth has also launched a comprehensive resource guide for Marylanders affected by the government shutdown.
