Elfreth Statement on President Trump Withholding Federal Funding

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Today, Congresswoman Sarah Elfreth (MD-03) issued the following statement after President Trump announced his administration will be withholding federal funding from communities across the country.

“I am deeply concerned by President Trump’s unconstitutional and unprecedented withholding of federal funding. Congress holds the power of the purse which means this funding has already been signed into law and appropriated by Congress for this specific purpose. His actions put every family, nonprofit organization, and state and local government that depends on these funds in a state of uncertainty.  This is governance by chaos.”

“President Trump is intentionally withholding federal funding that communities from coast to coast are counting on to impress his political ideology—regardless of whether he has the authority to do it. We need this funding to build new roads, fix bridges, fund child care facilities, support our veterans, fund life-saving cancer research, strengthen our infrastructure against natural disasters, and so much more.”

“As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I was shocked by the Department of Defense’s halt in new contract awards and solicitations. I want to be clear that President Trump’s actions are putting our national security at risk and leaving our country less safe.”
